Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Senior Manager, Marine Insurance & P&I Crew Claims to take ownership of a specialized Marine Insurance and Crew Claims function. This is a senior leadership role responsible for setting the direction for how the team operates, ensuring accountability for claims outcomes, and representing the organization at a senior level with shipowners, principals, P&I Clubs, insurers, and other maritime stakeholders.

The successful candidate will make decisions on complex and high-stakes claims matters and serve as a visible leader both internally and externally. The role requires a strong combination of technical expertise in marine insurance and P&I claims, senior leadership capability, sound judgment, and a genuine commitment to ensuring that seafarers and their families are treated fairly and with care.

This role carries overall accountability for the performance, direction, governance, and reputation of the Marine Insurance and Crew Claims function.

Key Responsibilities

Own the function end-to-end: Drive the strategy, structure, operational standards, processes, and governance of the Marine Insurance and Crew Claims function, with overall accountability for its performance and service delivery.

Lead and develop the team: Build team capability, establish clear direction, mentor managers and claims handlers, and develop a high-performing culture focused on accountability, quality, and professional claims handling.

Provide subject matter expertise: Act as the technical authority on complex, high-value, sensitive, or disputed P&I, marine insurance, crew, and family claims, providing expert guidance on coverage, liability, settlement, escalation, and risk.

Manage senior stakeholder relationships: Represent the organization at a senior level in claims reviews, negotiations, and strategic discussions with shipowners, principals, P&I Clubs, insurers, brokers, and other maritime stakeholders.

Drive continuous improvement: Identify and implement improvements to claims processes, operational controls, governance, reporting, and service standards to improve efficiency, consistency, quality, and risk management.

Champion fair and compassionate claims handling: Establish and maintain high standards for how claims involving seafarers and their families are managed, ensuring that individuals of different nationalities and backgrounds are treated fairly, professionally, and with appropriate care.

Own compliance and risk: Ensure the function operates in accordance with P&I Club guidelines, marine insurance terms, maritime regulations, MLC 2006, crew employment contracts, and other applicable requirements. Personally oversee the escalation and management of significant claims and risk issues.

Oversee claims performance: Establish appropriate KPIs, controls, reporting mechanisms, and review processes to monitor claims performance, service quality, financial exposure, and operational risks.

Support strategic decision-making: Provide senior management with clear analysis, recommendations, and risk assessments on complex claims, emerging issues, and matters that may have significant financial, contractual, operational, or reputational impact.

What You'll Bring

10+ years of senior-level experience in marine insurance, P&I claims, crew claims, maritime insurance, or closely related maritime operations. This is not an entry point into people management. The successful candidate should have already demonstrated experience leading teams and owning operational outcomes at a senior level.

Deep and authoritative knowledge of P&I Club rules, marine insurance policies, MLC 2006, crew employment contracts, and maritime claims practices.

Proven experience handling and making decisions on complex, high-value, sensitive, or disputed crew and P&I claims.

A strong track record of representing an organization directly with shipowners, principals, P&I Clubs, insurers, brokers, and other senior maritime stakeholders, with the confidence to act as the senior voice in the room.

Genuine experience working with a multinational seafarer workforce, with sensitivity to the different circumstances, contractual arrangements, and needs of seafarers and their families.

Strong executive presence, judgment, negotiation, and communication skills, with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and make sound decisions on high-stakes matters.

Proven ability to build, mentor, and lead teams, including developing managers and senior claims professionals.

Demonstrated ability to shape strategy, improve processes, establish governance, and strengthen operational standards, rather than simply execute existing procedures.

Strong understanding of maritime risk, claims governance, compliance, and regulatory requirements.
