What does an IT Data Backup and Recovery Admin do
The Data Backup and Recovery Administrator will ensure data integrity, availability, and security by developing effective backup strategies, performing regular tests, and troubleshooting issues. This individual will collaborate closely with other IT departments and business units to ensure seamless data protection and rapid recovery processes in case of any data loss or disaster.

- Backup & Recovery Administration:
- Implement, configure, and manage enterprise backup and recovery solutions using Cohesity, Zerto, and Nutanix.
- Ensure the success of backup jobs by monitoring daily backup activities, troubleshooting failures, and resolving issues promptly.
- Manage backup schedules, retention policies, and storage utilization to ensure optimal performance and compliance with data retention regulations.
- Disaster Recovery Planning:
- Develop, test, and maintain disaster recovery (DR) plans in coordination with key stakeholders.
- Utilize Zerto to design and implement DR strategies, including replication, failover, and failback procedures.
- Ensure DR readiness by performing periodic DR tests and adjusting strategies as necessary.
- Data Protection & Integrity:
- Maintain and enhance data security and availability through backup encryption, secure storage, and best practices in data protection.
- Implement and manage disaster recovery replication across multiple sites using Nutanix's capabilities.
- Monitor system health and ensure high availability of backup systems.
- Collaboration & Support:
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand business needs and develop tailored backup and recovery solutions.
- Provide Tier 2/3 support for backup-related issues, ensuring timely resolution of incidents and outages.
- Train and mentor junior staff on backup processes and tools, ensuring adherence to best practices.
- Documentation & Compliance:
- Maintain detailed documentation of backup configurations, policies, disaster recovery procedures, and any changes in the environment.
- Ensure compliance with industry regulations (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA) related to data retention, backup, and recovery processes.
- Conduct regular audits of backup procedures and environments, recommending improvements as necessary.
What are we looking for in you
Required Qualifications
- Experience:
- 3-5+ years of experience in backup and recovery administration, with proven expertise in Cohesity, Zerto, and Nutanix environments.
- Strong experience with enterprise backup tools, disaster recovery planning, and data protection strategies.
- Hands-on experience with storage systems, virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V), and cloud-based backup solutions.
- Skills:
- In-depth knowledge of data backup technologies, including file, application, and database backups.
- Proficiency in configuring and managing Cohesity backup solutions, Zerto disaster recovery platforms, and Nutanix clusters.
- Familiarity with scripting (e.g., PowerShell, Python) to automate backup tasks.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex issues in backup and DR environments.
- Experience in Azure Backup and Azure Site Recovery (ASR) is desirable.
- Certifications:
- Relevant certifications in Cohesity, Zerto, Nutanix, or other backup/recovery technologies are highly preferred (e.g., ZCP, NCCP, Cohesity Certified).
- Additional certifications such as VMware Certified Professional (VCP), Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator, or similar are advantageous.
