Job Description

Job Description:

Inventory Aging and Excess & Obsolete (E&O) Analysis:

  • Own the monthly inventory aging and E&O reporting process across raw materials, work in process, semi-finished goods, finished goods, and outside processing inventory.
  • Develop and maintain aging views by item, product family, location, inventory category, and aging bucket; identify inventory with limited or no recent demand, slow movement, or elevated obsolescence risk.
  • Calculate and support the E&O reserve in accordance with company policy, including demand-based excess analysis, aging considerations, usage history, open demand, lifecycle status, and known disposition plans.
  • Prepare clear reserve roll-forwards and explain period-over-period changes, including new exposures, usage, disposals, write-offs, recoveries, transfers, and methodology impacts.
  • Lead recurring cross-functional E&O reviews with Operations, Supply Chain, Planning, Sales, and Finance; maintain an action log with owners, target dates, and expected financial or working-capital impact.
  • Analyze root causes of aged and excess inventory, such as forecast error, minimum order quantities, engineering or specification changes, quality holds, canceled demand, overproduction, and transaction timing, and recommend preventive actions.
  • Monitor disposition activity and validate that scrap, sale, rework, return-to-vendor, or alternate-use transactions are recorded timely and accurately.

Inventory Accounting, Reconciliation, and Controls:

  • Reconcile inventory subledger balances to the general ledger and investigate reconciling items, unusual movements, negative on-hand balances, and transaction errors.
  • Analyze inventory adjustments, cycle-count results, job close variances, material usage, outside processing transactions, and other inventory-related P&L impacts; coordinate timely corrective actions.
  • Support monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities, including inventory valuation, reserve entries, account reconciliations, and management reporting.
  • Partner with site teams on cycle counts and physical inventories; assess count performance, identify recurring control gaps, and verify completion of remediation actions.
  • Maintain documentation and evidence supporting internal controls, accounting policies, internal audits, and external audits.

Reporting, Forecasting, and Business Partnership:

  • Create concise monthly dashboards and commentary covering inventory balances, turns, aging, E&O exposure, reserve coverage, adjustments, and key drivers by site or business segment.
  • Analyze historical trends and operational assumptions to support inventory forecasts, annual budgets, cash-flow planning, and working-capital targets.
  • Provide actionable insights to the Plant Controller and business partners, highlighting material risks, trend changes, control issues, and decisions required.
  • Improve reporting efficiency and data quality through standardized templates, automated data preparation, repeatable reconciliations, and documented procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Supply Chain, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 2-4 years of experience in inventory accounting, cost accounting, inventory analysis, supply chain finance, or financial analysis in a manufacturing or distribution environment.
  • Hands-on experience with inventory aging and E&O analysis, reserve calculations, or slow-moving inventory review is a plus.
  • Experience with Oracle or a comparable ERP system is a plus.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including PivotTables, XLOOKUP, SUMIFS, data validation, and analysis of large data sets; Power Query or Power BI experience is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of inventory flows, inventory valuation, COGS, reserves, reconciliations, and the financial-statement impact of inventory transactions.
  • Ability to translate detailed data into clear conclusions, business risks, and practical actions for finance and non-finance stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving, organization, follow-through, and attention to detail, with the ability to manage recurring deadlines independently.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills and the confidence to lead cross-functional inventory reviews and challenge unsupported assumptions constructively.
