Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced and results-oriented Grant Writer to identify funding opportunities and develop persuasive, compliant, and well-researched grant proposals. This role will support a US-based organization by managing grant applications from initial research through submission and post-award documentation.
The ideal candidate combines excellent writing and research skills with strong project management, attention to detail, and the ability to translate organizational programs and objectives into compelling funding proposals. The Grant Writer will collaborate with program leaders, finance teams, subject-matter experts, and other stakeholders to ensure that submissions are accurate, competitive, and aligned with funder requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Grant Research and Opportunity Assessment
- Research grant opportunities from government agencies, foundations, corporations, and other funding organizations.
- Evaluate funding opportunities based on eligibility, strategic alignment, award potential, requirements, and deadlines.
- Maintain an organized pipeline and calendar of grant opportunities, submissions, reporting dates, and renewal schedules.
- Monitor funding trends, changes in grant requirements, and emerging opportunities relevant to the organization.
Proposal Development
- Prepare compelling letters of inquiry, concept papers, grant proposals, applications, and supporting documentation.
- Translate program objectives, organizational capabilities, and expected outcomes into clear and persuasive narratives.
- Tailor applications to the priorities, evaluation criteria, and instructions of each funder.
- Incorporate credible research, data, impact measurements, and supporting evidence into proposals.
- Review and edit proposal content for clarity, consistency, accuracy, tone, and compliance.
Stakeholder Coordination
- Work with program leaders, finance personnel, and subject-matter experts to collect the information required for each application.
- Coordinate the development of project descriptions, timelines, budgets, outcome measures, and supporting documents.
- Facilitate proposal-planning meetings and communicate responsibilities, deadlines, and submission requirements.
- Follow up with stakeholders to ensure timely completion of proposal components.
Compliance and Submission Management
- Review funding guidelines and ensure that each application meets eligibility, formatting, documentation, and submission requirements.
- Complete grant applications through online portals and other funder-designated platforms.
- Maintain accurate records of submitted proposals, funder correspondence, awards, declines, and pending decisions.
- Protect confidential organizational, financial, employee, and beneficiary information.
Reporting and Continuous Improvement
- Support the preparation of progress reports, renewal applications, financial narratives, and other post-award requirements.
- Track proposal activity, success rates, funding secured, and other grant-development metrics.
- Maintain reusable organizational information, proposal templates, program descriptions, and supporting documents.
- Review feedback and application outcomes to improve future proposals.
- Recommend improvements to the organization's grant-development processes and tools.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Business, Public Administration, International Development, Social Sciences, or a related discipline.
- Three to seven years of professional grant writing, proposal writing, fundraising, technical writing, or closely related experience.
- Demonstrated experience preparing proposals for foundations, corporations, nonprofit funders, or government agencies.
- Excellent written English, editing, proofreading, and verbal communication skills.
- Strong research, analytical, and information-synthesis capabilities.
- Ability to interpret detailed guidelines and convert complex information into clear, persuasive narratives.
- Strong organizational and project-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
- High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy and compliance.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and online research tools.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate remotely with US-based stakeholders.
- Willingness and ability to work during agreed US business hours.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting a US-based nonprofit, consulting organization, educational institution, healthcare provider, or government contractor.
- Familiarity with US federal, state, foundation, or corporate grant processes.
- Experience using SalesForce, or comparable platforms.
- Working knowledge of grant budgets, logic models, theories of change, monitoring and evaluation, or outcome measurement.
- Experience writing proposals related to US-based foundations.
- Familiarity with grant-management systems, CRM platforms, or project-management tools.
- A portfolio of successful proposals or a documented history of securing grant funding.
