Job Description

Black & White Engineering is a multi-award-winning engineering consultancy, with nearly 600 employees in teams based in our UK, European, Middle East and Asia Pacific offices. We have been providing a wide range of Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) engineering consultancy services since 2007 and are now expanding our Civil and Structural Engineering division.

Our engineering expertise reaches across all sectors of the construction industry, providing pragmatic and practical design solutions to ensure our projects are spatially and operationally efficient. Our design process fully considers the installation and maintenance practicalities on site.

Due to our continued growth, we are looking to recruit an Engineer Level or Senior Level experienced Acoustic Engineer person, ideally with background in Computational particularly the technology/data centre industry and to work as part of a team on technically challenging projects.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary design team, providing technical support to project engineers on building services, data centre, and commercial building projects.
  • Develop capability in both Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and external acoustics through supervised project work, structured training, and technical reviews by Senior and Principal Engineers.
  • Support external acoustic assessments, including the collection and review of equipment sound power data, site layouts, source locations, receiver locations, and potential mitigation strategies.
  • Assist with acoustic modelling and environmental noise calculations for building services plant and external noise sources, ensuring all work is reviewed and verified by senior engineers.
  • Support the delivery of CFD studies by preparing project inputs, reviewing engineering drawings, extracting data, generating result visualisations, and documenting findings for airflow, thermal, and equipment performance assessments.
  • Assist with CFD model preparation activities, including geometry reviews, boundary condition schedules, model validation, and quality assurance checks.
  • Review architectural, structural, MEP, and vendor documentation to identify information required for CFD and acoustic analysis and raise technical queries where information is incomplete.
  • Perform engineering calculations using company tools and industry-standard software, including fluid mechanics, heat transfer, thermal performance, and noise-related calculations.
  • Prepare clear and concise technical reports, calculations, drawings, mark-ups, figures, and engineering documentation to communicate methodologies, assumptions, results, and recommendations.
  • Contribute to feasibility studies and design option assessments, considering factors such as acoustic performance, thermal performance, spatial constraints, constructability, and cost.
  • Maintain project records and documentation in accordance with company quality assurance procedures, project budgets, and programme requirements.
  • Participate in project reviews and technical discussions, contributing to the development of practical and innovative engineering solutions.
  • Identify personal training and development needs and maintain a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Plan focused on CFD, acoustics, building services engineering, and relevant industry standards.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and the development of engineering best practices within the Acoustic and Computational Engineering team.
  • Depending on experience, capability, and business requirements, develop a focused specialism within either CFD, acoustics, or related engineering disciplines.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Experience at Engineer or Senior Engineer level, with an interest in acoustic engineering and computational analysis.
  • Strong understanding of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, applied mathematics, and engineering problem-solving principles.
  • Demonstrated interest in developing expertise in both CFD and external acoustics.
  • Understanding of mechanical building services systems, particularly ventilation, heat rejection systems, plant equipment, and external plant arrangements, is advantageous.
  • Ability to interpret and review engineering drawings, technical specifications, schedules, equipment datasheets, and design documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to work systematically with engineering assumptions, inputs, outputs, limitations, and quality control requirements.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare technical documentation and communicate findings effectively to multidisciplinary teams.
  • Willingness to develop expertise in external acoustic modelling and environmental noise assessment for building services plant and infrastructure projects.
  • Willingness to learn and support CFD workflows, including model preparation, validation, result interpretation, and reporting.
  • Strong computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
  • Experience with data analysis, programming, or automation tools such as Python is desirable.
  • Exposure to CAD and modelling software, including AutoCAD, Revit, Rhino, or similar platforms, is advantageous.
  • Exposure to CFD software such as ANSYS Fluent, STAR-CCM+, or equivalent modelling tools is desirable but not essential.
  • Exposure to acoustic modelling software such as CadnaA, SoundPLAN, or equivalent tools is desirable but not essential.
  • Self-motivated with a proactive approach to learning and professional development.
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively within a collaborative, multidisciplinary, and international team environment.
  • Experience within the data centre, mission critical, commercial building, or building services engineering sectors would be advantageous.
