Job Description

Fractional Chief Financial Officer

Employment Type: Independent Contractor

Work Model: Remote

Work Hours: US Eastern Standard Time (EST) overlap.

Role Overview

We are seeking a client-facing, highly articulate Fractional Chief Financial Officer to serve as a trusted strategic financial advisor across a portfolio of small to mid-sized U.S. businesses. Operating in direct collaboration with business owners and executive leadership teams, you will translate complex financial reporting into actionable growth strategies, optimize working capital, establish KPIs, and elevate overall profitability.

In this seat, you will sit above the bookkeeping and accounting functions—leveraging client financial statements to deliver forward-looking insights, budget models, and strategic recommendations. This is a position designed for an autonomous financial expert who thrives on building long-term client relationships and communicating complex financial concepts in plain, practical language.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Financial Advisory & Client Relationship Management
  • Executive Financial Guidance: Serve as the primary strategic advisor for multiple client entities, leading client meetings to interpret financial statements, review management packages, and guide business planning.
  • Financial Storytelling: Translate raw accounting data and monthly financial outputs into clear, client-friendly narratives and strategic recommendations that drive business value.
  • Tax & Valuation Collaboration: Advise clients on tax planning considerations in coordination with internal tax teams, while supporting business planning, growth strategies, and risk mitigation.
  • Financial Planning, Forecasting & Cash Flow Governance
  • Budgeting & Modeling: Develop, monitor, and update annual operational budgets, rolling financial forecasts, and 13-week cash flow projections.
  • Margin & Cost Optimization: Analyze cost structures, identify margin leaks, evaluate operational efficiencies, and implement strategies to expand profitability and liquidity.
  • Dashboard & KPI Management: Establish custom financial dashboards and track meaningful Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) tailored to each client's industry and growth goals.
  • Accounting Operations Oversight & Documentation
  • Accounting Integration: Collaborate directly with internal bookkeeping and accounting teams to ensure accurate, timely month-end closes and financial statement preparation.
  • Process & Record Hygiene: Maintain organized, audit-ready client documentation, task tracking, and structured financial records across all assigned accounts.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Leadership Experience: 2 to 5 years of professional experience operating as a CFO, Fractional CFO, or senior financial advisor supporting U.S.-based small to mid-sized businesses.
  • Accounting Software Mastery: 3 to 7 years of hands-on experience navigating QuickBooks Online (QBO).
  • Financial & Modeling Capabilities: Deep expertise in financial planning, budgeting, cash flow management, variance analysis, and advanced Microsoft Excel spreadsheet modeling.
  • Client-Facing Communication: Exceptional written and verbal English skills, with proven confidence leading live virtual presentations and translating technical finance terms into plain language for founders.
  • Academic Foundation: Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related quantitative field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional certifications such as CPA, CMA, MSA, or MBA.
  • Working familiarity with tools such as Hubflo, My TaxPrepOffice, or modern financial reporting and dashboard platforms.
  • Experience supporting startups, professional service firms, or founder-managed businesses.
  • Knowledge of U.S. small business tax planning considerations and company valuation frameworks.

Success Metrics (KPIs)

  • Client Performance Elevation: Delivering measurable improvements in client gross margins, cash flow liquidity, and budget variance precision.
  • Advisory Engagement & Satisfaction: Maintaining high client retention and trust across the managed portfolio through proactive, clear communication.
  • Deliverable Timeliness: On-time completion of all monthly reporting packages, cash flow updates, and budget iterations.
