Job Description

Job Purpose

The Finance Payroll Officer will oversee day-to-day accounting operations related to Australian financial activities, ensuring compliance with local regulations and company policies. This role will support accurate financial reporting, payroll process, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to maintain the integrity of financial data.

Key Responsibilities

Duties

  • Perform Payroll processes
  • Perform fortnightly and quarterly payroll processing for the National Secretariat, NT Branch and TAS Branch
  • Liaise with People and Culture team and relevant Branch Directors on a regular basis for payroll variations
  • Calculate and process employee salaries
  • Process payroll journals
  • Generate payment files and distribute payslips
  • Respond to and resolve payroll enquiries
  • Lodge fortnightly and quarterly Single Touch Payroll declarations
  • Process superannuation submissions
  • Prepare monthly payroll tax calculations and returns
  • Prepare annual workers compensation returns
  • Process salary package payments and prepare salary packaging reconciliations
  • Respond to Australian Bureau of Statistics survey requests
  • Prepare National Councillor expenses summary
  • Prepare payroll workpapers to assist year-end statutory reporting
  • Prepare reconciliation of payroll clearing accounts and leave provisions (monthly)
  • Accounts assistance for the NT Branch
  • Back-up for banking processes

Authorities

  • Generation of bank payment files for authorisation

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • CPA or CA qualification (or working towards).
  • Minimum 23 years of accounting experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Australian accounting standards, tax regulations, and compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., MYOB, Xero, SAP, or similar).
  • Good attention to detail, analytical skills, and problem-solving ability.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

Preferred

  • Experience in a multi-entity or shared services environment.
  • Familiarity with payroll processing and superannuation compliance.
  • Exposure to financial reporting for NFP or education sectors (if applicable).
