Job Description
This research project, led by the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in partnership with the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development Staff (PCSDS), addresses the interlinked challenges of climate change and health in the Philippines coastal marinescapes, with a geographic focus on Palawan. While existing research has focused mainly on the biophysical dimensions of marine ecosystems, this project fills a critical socioeconomic gap by building the evidence base for health-oriented policy responses — examining how mangroves support human health and livelihoods, and how sustainable Marine Protected Area (MPA) and fisheries management can be designed in a just and equitable way for small-scale fishers.
Using a mixed-methods approach — combining desk review, stakeholder consultations, surveys, key informant interviews, and focus group discussions — the project will generate a peer-reviewed journal article, two policy briefs, and a high-level policy dialogue with Philippine and UK stakeholders, including DENR, ADB, and FCDO. Funded through the UK's International Science Partnerships Fund (ISPF) Challenge-Oriented Research Grants, the research supports the Philippines national Blue Economy Agenda and strengthens UK-Philippines collaboration on climate, health, and ocean resilience.
Key Responsibilities
We encourage applications from members of the communities we work with, and from those who share our passion for conservation and collaboration. At ZSL, we value respect, local knowledge, and shared purpose, together, we can make a real difference for wildlife, people and planet.
We're ZSL, an international conservation charity. Through our unrivalled animal experts in our two zoos (London Zoo and Whipsnade Zoo), the work of our pioneering scientists, our dedicated conservationists, our purpose is to inspire, inform and empower people to stop wild animals going extinct. Our vision is a world where wildlife thrives and we're working every day to achieve this. In 2010, the ZSL-Philippines Country Office was established as a duly accredited non-government organization registered under the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as a local branch of a foreign charitable institution registered in UK and holds its primary office in Iloilo City.
