The Role
As a fast-growing Australian based internet provider, we're looking for a leader to scale our organisation's software development resources, team structure and technical capabilities to meet future business needs.
Reporting directly to senior leadership, you'll lead software engineering teams, technical systems and integrations across the business. Managing the Development Team, you'll work closely with the Project Team to deliver customer facing, internal and B2B software products.
This role suits someone who values team culture and actively cultivates the wellbeing of the team, and who builds strong relationships while working remotely with staff in Australia, Philippines, and Vietnam. You'll bring technical expertise and confidence gained from experience to deliver a forward thinking technical vision, with ownership of decisions for resource allocation, expanding technical systems and timely product delivery.
Key Responsibilities
People & Team Leadership
- Own hiring, onboarding, and performance management across the development team
- Develop leadership capability in Team Leaders through direct management, coaching, and mentorship
- Drive team performance through ongoing career development at all levels
- Own decisions on team structure, resourcing, and retention as the team continues to grow
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive and high-performing team culture
Technical Stewardship
- Set the technical direction of the Development Team, to meet future product and business goals
- Managing ongoing product delivery in a legacy system while leading decisions on addressing technical debt, modernising systems, and maintaining engineering standards
- Hold sufficient hands-on technical familiarity to evaluate proposals critically, and challenge or validate technical recommendations
- Champion company-wide initiatives to improve technical systems, workflows, and development processes
- Guide the team's approach to integrating AI to enhance developer productivity and to identify broader opportunities across the business
Delivery & Stakeholder Management
- Own end-to-end delivery of the development team's commitments, operating within a Scrum framework
- Partner closely with the Project Team on roadmap planning, priority setting, and scope negotiation
- Provide reliable delivery estimates and communicate progress, risks, and team health clearly to senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders
- Represent the development team's interests to senior leadership
Process & Continuous Improvement
- Improve software engineering quality, productivity, and ways of working
- Drive adoption of best practices across the team and guide the team to act on issues as they are identified
- Building and adapting systems, processes, and organisational culture that will support the team as it scales toward 30+ employees
Skills & Experience
Essential
- 10+ years of experience in software development or related industry
- 5+ years in leadership or engineering management roles, with direct people management responsibility
- Demonstrated experience scaling a development team within a growth-stage organisation to medium-scale
- Technical familiarity with our core stack technologies (PHP, Laravel, JavaScript, HTML, JS frameworks, MySQL/MariaDB)
- Track record of leading company-wide technical improvement initiatives
- Experience working as a leader within Agile/Scrum delivery frameworks
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to effectively speak to technical and non-technical audiences
- Experience transforming development workflows to utilise AI tools for within a legacy environment
