Data Engineer

About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Data Engineer to design, build, and maintain production-grade data pipelines and inference layers that support our audience development engine.

This role combines data engineering, geospatial analytics, data governance, and privacy-focused system design. The successful candidate will work with aggregated, privacy-safe signals—including platform interests, general search intent, historical public safety geography, and reputable demographic data—to develop high-performing audience segments.

A critical component of this position is maintaining a compliance-first and adversarial mindset. You will be responsible for proactively stress-testing data systems, identifying potential data leakage or misuse scenarios, and implementing technical guardrails to ensure that our systems do not enable unauthorized identification.

The role requires strict adherence to established data privacy and compliance standards. Real-time incident locations and individual-level information about specific accidents must never be ingested, processed, or used to construct individual-level knowledge.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, scale, and optimize ETL/ELT pipelines that transform privacy-safe data signals into actionable marketing segments.
  • Develop and maintain scalable data models, analysis-ready datasets, and audience segment outputs.
  • Proactively stress-test data models and pipelines to identify potential compliance vulnerabilities, data leakage, or unauthorized identification risks.
  • Develop geospatial scoring models at the ZIP, county, or corridor level using aggregated historical data.
  • Perform spatial joins, regional scoring, and spatial aggregations without relying on individual-level tracking.
  • Establish robust data lineage, source validation, data quality monitoring, and data freshness and retention controls.
  • Develop audit-ready workflows and documentation for audience segment creation and campaign activation.
  • Collaborate closely with Growth, Marketing, and Legal/Compliance teams to translate business and regulatory requirements into practical technical safeguards.
  • Evaluate and onboard third-party data vendors, including reviewing data provenance, licensing, privacy certifications, and usage rights.
  • Monitor data usage and maintain appropriate controls to ensure compliant handling of data assets.
  • Identify opportunities to improve pipeline performance, scalability, audience precision, and overall data reliability.

First 60–90 Day Objectives

During your first 60–90 days, you will be expected to:

  • Deploy reliable, production-grade ETL/ELT pipelines with automated monitoring and repeatable deployment workflows.
  • Establish a governed library of reusable inference layers covering geospatial, interest, search intent, and demographic signals.
  • Implement clear data lineage and embedded compliance controls across key data assets.
  • Standardize audience segment-building workflows and produce audit-ready artifacts.
  • Identify opportunities for performance improvements through structured experimentation and pipeline optimization.

Required Qualifications

  • Expert-level SQL skills with demonstrated experience building analysis-ready tables, dimensional models, and audience segment outputs.
  • Strong proficiency in Python for data processing, automation, and pipeline development.
  • Hands-on experience with major cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Experience working with enterprise data warehouses such as Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift.
  • Strong understanding of data modeling, ETL/ELT architecture, and production data pipelines.
  • Demonstrated experience with geospatial data processing, including spatial joins, regional scoring, and spatial aggregation.
  • Strong understanding of data governance, lineage, data quality, access controls, retention, and data freshness.
  • Ability to approach systems from an adversarial risk perspective and identify potential compliance or privacy vulnerabilities.
  • Strong understanding of the distinction between inference and knowledge, with the ability to translate privacy principles into concrete technical controls.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with technical, business, marketing, and compliance stakeholders.

Non-Negotiable Compliance Requirements

  • Ability to clearly distinguish between inference and individual-level knowledge.
  • Strict adherence to the use of aggregated historical geographic data that is at least 45 days old.
  • Real-time incident data must never be ingested or processed.
  • Demonstrated commitment to preventing unauthorized identification or prohibited data use.
  • Strong diligence when evaluating data vendors, including data provenance, licensing, privacy certifications, and usage rights.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with modern data transformation and orchestration tools such as dbt, Apache Airflow, Dagster, or Apache Spark.
  • Experience in AdTech, MarTech, audience development, or marketing data platforms.
  • Experience integrating audience data with platforms such as Meta, Google Ads, TikTok, or programmatic DSPs.
  • Familiarity with privacy and regulatory frameworks such as CCPA/CPRA, TCPA, DPPA, and GDPR concepts.
  • Experience with large-scale geospatial segmentation, market mapping, or audience analytics.
