The Assistant Controller / Senior Accounting Manager serves as a key link between the Accounting Leads and the Controller/CFO team. This position is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, completeness, timeliness, and consistency of financial reporting across assigned clients and provides second-level review of work prepared by Accounting Leads and Accountants.

The role serves as a primary escalation point for complex accounting, reconciliation, month-end close, audit, and financial reporting matters. The goal is to ensure that client financials are accurate, fully reconciled, properly supported, and ready for CFO review, allowing the CFO team to focus on strategy, forecasting, board reporting, and executive-level advisory services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES1. Month-End Close & Financial Reporting - 30%

  • Review monthly financial statements prepared by Accounting Leads.
  • Review balance sheet reconciliations and supporting schedules.
  • Review significant or unusual journal entries.
  • Verify proper accounting for accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, payroll liabilities, AP/AR, and other balance sheet accounts.
  • Review fund, class, program, and interfund accounting, as applicable.
  • Review Budget vs. Actual reports and investigate unusual or material variances.
  • Ensure month-end close activities are completed accurately and on schedule.
  • Provide final accounting-level review and approval before financial statements move to the CFO.

2. Quality Control & Accounting Oversight - 25%

  • Perform second-level quality control over the work of Accounting Leads and Accountants.
  • Identify recurring errors, reconciliation issues, process weaknesses, and control gaps.
  • Maintain standardized month-end closing checklists and reconciliation requirements.
  • Ensure appropriate supporting documentation exists for material account balances.
  • Monitor outstanding reconciliation items, aged balances, and unresolved accounting issues.
  • Establish and monitor corrective actions when accounting quality does not meet required standards.
  • Conduct periodic internal accounting and client-file reviews.
  • Promote consistency in accounting processes, documentation, and financial reporting across assigned clients.

3. Technical Accounting & Problem Resolution - 15%

  • Serve as the first escalation point for complex accounting matters, including:
    • Revenue and expense recognition
    • Year-end accruals and cutoff
    • Interfund receivables and payables
    • Restricted funds
    • Grant accounting
    • Fixed assets and depreciation
    • Lease accounting
    • Payroll accounting
    • Prior-period adjustments
    • Bank reconciliation discrepancies
    • Complex journal entries
  • Research, analyze, and resolve accounting issues before escalation to the CFO.
  • Document accounting conclusions and recommendations.
  • Ensure consistent accounting treatment across clients where appropriate.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and internal controls.
4. Audit & Year-End Close - 15%

  • Coordinate accounting-side audit preparation.
  • Review audit schedules and PBC (Prepared by Client) schedules before submission.
  • Review year-end accruals, cutoff procedures, and closing entries.
  • Ensure balance sheet accounts have appropriate supporting schedules and documentation.
  • Respond to auditor accounting questions and coordinate follow-up with Accounting Leads.
  • Track proposed audit adjustments, recurring findings, and corrective actions.
  • Ensure approved audit adjustments are properly recorded.
  • Support timely and accurate year-end close activities.

5. Team Development & Supervision - 10%

  • Coach Accounting Leads and Accountants on technical accounting and review standards.
  • Provide training on month-end close, reconciliations, financial reporting, and audit preparation.
  • Review staff work and provide timely, specific, and constructive feedback.
  • Help establish accounting procedures, templates, checklists, and training materials.
  • Assist management in evaluating Accounting Lead and Accountant performance.
  • Support onboarding and development of new accounting staff.
  • Promote accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement within the accounting team.

6. Client & CFO Support - 5%

  • Participate in client meetings when senior-level accounting support is required.
  • Explain significant accounting adjustments, variances, and accounting issues to clients and CFOs.
  • Support CFOs with financial statement analysis and underlying accounting details.
  • Provide accounting insights and recommendations based on financial data.
  • Escalate significant financial, compliance, cash, control, or accounting risks promptly.

ROLE BOUNDARIES

The Assistant Controller / Senior Accounting Manager generally does not own:

  • Client financial strategy
  • Board presentations
  • Long-term forecasting
  • Debt financing
  • Executive-level recommendations
  • Overall CFO/client relationship

These responsibilities remain with the CFO/Controller team.

The Position Also Does Not Routinely Perform

  • Day-to-day bookkeeping
  • Routine AP data entry
  • Routine bank reconciliations
  • Preparation of every monthly accounting schedule

These activities remain with the Bookkeeper, Accountant, and Accounting Lead teams

Work Setup Remote

Hired staff is required to have a stable and reliable internet connection with at least 20MBPS for both download AND upload speed

Must work Night Shift from 9PM to 6AM PHT
