Job Description

Job Summary

The Content Development Specialist is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining comprehensive training curricula, learning materials, and educational programs focused on medical coding. This role partners with Coding Operations, Quality, Compliance, and Training stakeholders to create engaging, accurate, and effective learning solutions that support coder onboarding, upskilling, quality improvement, certification preparation, and operational excellence.

The ideal candidate combines expertise in instructional design with a strong understanding of medical coding principles, coding guidelines, healthcare documentation, and adult learning methodologies.

Key Responsibilities

Curriculum Design & Development

  • Design and develop end-to-end medical coding curricula for new hire training, cross-training, upskilling, and continuing education.
  • Create structured learning paths for ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, HCPCS, and specialty-specific coding programs.
  • Develop instructor-led training materials, e-learning modules, job aids, reference guides, workbooks, assessments, and certification preparation content.
  • Ensure training content aligns with organizational goals, client requirements, coding standards, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Apply adult learning principles and instructional design methodologies to maximize learner engagement and retention.

Learning Needs Analysis

  • Conduct training needs assessments through collaboration with Coding Operations, Quality, and stakeholders.
  • Analyze coding quality results, audit findings, performance metrics, and learner feedback to identify skill gaps.
  • Recommend training interventions and learning solutions that address performance opportunities.

Content Maintenance & Compliance

  • Review and update training materials based on annual coding guideline changes, payer requirements, and regulatory updates.
  • Ensure educational content reflects current coding standards, compliance requirements, and organizational policies.
  • Manage version control and documentation of training materials.

Assessment & Evaluation

  • Develop knowledge checks, competency assessments, coding scenarios, certification readiness assessments, and practical exercises.
  • Measure effectiveness of training programs through learner evaluations, performance outcomes, quality scores, and post-training assessments.
  • Use data-driven insights to continuously improve curriculum effectiveness.

Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Partner with Coding Quality, Operations Leaders, SMEs, and Compliance teams to validate content accuracy.
  • Support training initiatives for process launches, client transitions, and workflow changes.
  • Participate in special projects focused on learning innovation and coding excellence.

Learning Technology & Innovation

  • Utilize learning management systems (LMS), authoring tools, and multimedia resources to develop engaging learning experiences.
  • Incorporate interactive learning methods, case studies, simulations, and scenario-based coding exercises.
  • Explore emerging learning technologies and best practices to enhance training effectiveness.

Qualifications

Education

  • Graduate of any 4-year course.

Experience

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of curriculum design, instructional design, or training content development experience.
  • Experience developing learning programs for healthcare or medical coding organizations preferred.
  • Medical Coding experience preferred but not required.

Technical Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of:
    • ICD-10-CM
    • ICD-10-PCS
    • CPT
    • HCPCS
    • Medical terminology
    • Anatomy and physiology
    • Coding compliance and regulatory requirements
  • Familiarity with instructional design methodologies such as ADDIE, SAM, or adult learning principles.
  • Experience with LMS platforms and e-learning authoring tools.
Certifications (Preferred)

  • ATD instructional design certifications are an advantage
