Your Role
As a
Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) Nurse Specialist – Inpatient, you will review and improve the quality, accuracy, and completeness of inpatient clinical documentation to support accurate coding, reimbursement, regulatory compliance, quality reporting, and denial prevention. You will collaborate with physicians, coders, and clinical teams to ensure the patient's clinical picture is accurately represented.
Specifically, You Will
- Perform concurrent and retrospective reviews of inpatient medical records to identify documentation gaps, inconsistencies, and opportunities for improvement.
- Issue compliant physician queries in accordance with AHIMA and ACDIS guidelines and ensure timely follow-up and resolution.
- Monitor and maintain query workflows, physician response rates, and documentation compliance metrics.
- Collaborate with coding teams to support accurate ICD-10-CM/PCS coding, MS-DRG and APR-DRG assignment, Severity of Illness (SOI), and Risk of Mortality (ROM) capture.
- Support denial prevention initiatives by ensuring documentation supports clinical validity, medical necessity, and reimbursement requirements.
- Partner with clinical denials and appeals teams to resolve documentation-related payer denials.
- Track CDI activities, generate performance reports, analyze trends, and recommend process improvements.
- Maintain compliance with regulatory standards while staying current on coding updates, documentation guidelines, and CDI best practices.
What You Need
Non-negotiables
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
- Active Philippine Registered Nurse (PHRN) or US Registered Nurse (USRN) license.
- Minimum of 2 years of inpatient Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) experience.
- Minimum of 2 years of acute care hospital experience (ICU and/or Medical-Surgical preferred).
- Working knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS coding, MS-DRG methodology, APR-DRG, SOI, ROM, and risk adjustment.
- Experience using hospital EMR systems such as Epic, Cerner, or Meditech.
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills (minimum CEFR B2 proficiency).
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
Preferred Skills/expertise
- CCDS, CDIP, CCS, or other Clinical Documentation Improvement/Coding certifications.
- Master's degree in Nursing, Healthcare, Business, or a related field.
- Experience using CDI and coding technology platforms.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and SharePoint).
- Strong understanding of AHIMA and ACDIS documentation guidelines and regulatory standards.
- Experience in physician education, documentation improvement initiatives, and matrixed healthcare environments.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary clinical and revenue cycle teams.
