Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Certified Medical Coder – Anesthesia to join our growing Revenue Cycle team. This role is responsible for accurately coding anesthesia services across multiple surgical specialties, including Gastroenterology (GI), Orthopedics, Spine, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R), and Podiatry.

The ideal candidate has extensive knowledge of anesthesia coding guidelines, time-based billing methodologies, payer regulations, and documentation requirements. This individual will ensure accurate code assignment, optimize reimbursement, maintain compliance with federal and commercial payer guidelines, and support overall revenue cycle performance.

Key Responsibilities

Anesthesia Coding

  • Review anesthesia records, operative reports, physician documentation, and clinical records to accurately assign:
    • CPT® codes
    • ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes
    • HCPCS Level II codes
    • Anesthesia CPT codes
  • Code anesthesia services for:
    • Gastroenterology (EGD, Colonoscopy, ERCP, and related procedures)
    • Orthopedic surgeries
    • Spine procedures
    • Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R)
    • Podiatry procedures
  • Assign appropriate:
    • Anesthesia modifiers
    • Physical status modifiers (P1–P6)
    • Qualifying circumstance codes
    • Time units and base units
  • Accurately calculate anesthesia reimbursement based on payer-specific billing methodologies and time-based coding requirements.
  • Ensure all coding complies with current CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, CMS, Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payer guidelines.
Documentation Review & Compliance

  • Review medical documentation for completeness, specificity, and coding accuracy.
  • Identify documentation deficiencies and communicate with providers when clarification is needed.
  • Maintain compliance with federal regulations, payer policies, National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits, and specialty-specific coding requirements.
  • Stay current on annual coding updates, payer policy changes, and industry best practices.

Revenue Cycle Support

  • Assist with coding-related claim edits, denials, and appeals.
  • Analyze denied claims and recommend corrective actions to improve reimbursement.
  • Collaborate with billing, providers, and revenue cycle staff to resolve coding issues efficiently.
  • Support coding audits and quality assurance initiatives.
  • Maintain productivity and accuracy standards while meeting established turnaround times.

Qualifications

  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or equivalent coding certification required.
  • Minimum 3 years of professional anesthesia coding experience.
  • Demonstrated experience coding anesthesia services for:
    • Gastroenterology (GI)
    • Orthopedics
    • Spine
    • Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R)
    • Podiatry
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • CPT
    • ICD-10-CM
    • HCPCS Level II
    • Anesthesia coding guidelines
    • Time-based anesthesia billing
    • Physical status modifiers
    • Qualifying circumstances
  • Experience working with Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance payers.
  • Strong understanding of payer reimbursement methodologies and coding compliance.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced remote environment while consistently meeting productivity and quality standards.
  • Experience supporting multispecialty anesthesia groups or surgical practices.
  • Familiarity with revenue cycle management processes and denial prevention strategies.
  • Experience reviewing operative reports and anesthesia documentation to optimize coding accuracy and reimbursement.
  • Knowledge of National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits and payer-specific coding requirements.
  • Experience using electronic medical records (EMR) and practice management systems.
  • Previous experience participating in coding audits, quality assurance, or compliance initiatives.
