An Inpatient Coder specializes in coding the medical records of patients who are admitted to hospitals or healthcare facilities for treatment. They are responsible for translating patients healthcare information, including diagnoses, symptoms, and treatments, into universally accepted codes. These codes are essential for billing, insurance claims, and maintaining healthcare data integrity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Reviewing Medical Records:Inpatient Coders analyze patients charts and medical records to gather relevant information regarding diagnoses, procedures, and treatments.
  • Assigning Codes:They utilize coding systems such as ICD-10-CM (for diagnoses) and CPT/HCPCS (for procedures) to assign accurate codes to services provided during a patient's hospital stay.
  • Ensuring Compliance:Inpatient Coders ensure that coding practices adhere to legal and regulatory standards, including guidelines from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and The Joint Commission.
  • Communicating with Healthcare Professionals:They often collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare personnel to clarify information and receive additional documentation if needed.
