CLIENT BACKGROUND
Our client-partner is a virtual CPA firm serving technology startups across Canada and the US. They act as an outsourced accounting and finance partner, helping founders build reliable financial operations and gain the clarity they need to scale.
They are a small, fully remote, technology-driven team that values strong client service, accurate and timely financial information, ownership, teamwork, and continuous improvement. Our client-partner wants people who spot problems, think through practical solutions, and look for ways to make both our clients and our firm better over time.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
As a Client Accountant, you'll take ownership of the accounting outcomes for a portfolio of technology startup clients, helping them maintain reliable financials and make better-informed decisions.
You'll lead the monthly close, oversee full-cycle accounting and reporting, communicate directly with clients, coordinate work across the team, and use your judgment to resolve issues and improve how the work gets done.
What Your Day to Day Will Look Like:
- Own the monthly close for approximately 3–5 technology startup clients, setting priorities, managing deadlines, and resolving open items.
- Review and, when needed, perform full-cycle accrual accounting, including reconciliations, AP, AR, payroll entries, journal entries, accruals, prepaids, deferred balances, fixed assets, and general ledger maintenance.
- Protect the integrity of client books by ensuring coding, documentation, accounting treatment, and supporting schedules are accurate and consistent.
- Prepare and review monthly financial statements, management reports, balance sheet schedules, close workpapers, and year-end support.
- Investigate unusual transactions, reconciliation differences, missing information, and process gaps, then recommend practical next steps.
- Communicate directly with clients through email, Slack, and virtual meetings,providing clear explanations and proactive status updates.
- Coordinate bookkeeping work with other team members, review output, resolve questions, and keep client work moving.
- Support Canadian and US payroll accounting, sales tax filings, tax workpapers, and other compliance-related workflows.
- Improve procedures, templates, documentation, quality controls, and client workflows.
- Help evaluate and use cloud-based, automation, and AI-enabled tools to improve accuracy, efficiency, and communication.
- Support client onboarding, cleanup projects, and other accounting priorities as the firm grows.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- CPA designation.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including meaningful responsibility for full-cycle accounting, month-end close, and financial statement preparation.
- North American accounting experience supporting Canadian or US clients. Canadian experience is preferred, but strong US experience is welcome if you can learn Canadian-specific payroll and sales tax requirements.
- Experience managing multiple clients or entities at once. Accounting firm,outsourced accounting, or client accounting services experience is strongly preferred.
- Strong accrual accounting knowledge, including reconciliations, cut-off, accruals,deferrals, supporting schedules, and financial reporting.
- Sound judgment and ownership. You can identify what is wrong or incomplete,determine the next step, and recommend a solution without waiting for detailed instructions.
- Excellent written and spoken English, with the confidence to lead clear and professional client conversations.
- Strong proficiency with Xero and Excel or Google Sheets. Experience with platforms such as Float, Ramp, or Brex is an asset.
- A process-improvement mindset and practical experience using automation or AItools to improve your work while maintaining accuracy, review standards, and confidentiality.
- Strong organization, responsiveness, and the ability to manage competing deadlines with limited supervision in a remote environment.
