Job Description
Purpose:
- To independently evaluate and develop organic and inorganic growth opportunities across GNV's portfolio, using strong financial acumen and financial modelling capability as the foundation for rigorous business-case development and investment analysis.
- The role is responsible for translating strategic, market, commercial, technical and operational assumptions into financial outcomes; identifying the key drivers of value and risk; and developing robust preliminary business cases and recommendations to support investment decisions.
- Reporting directly to the Head of Growth & New Ventures, the role is expected to independently structure and execute assigned opportunity evaluations and workstreams, with sufficient commercial judgment to determine whether an opportunity warrants further development and what must be validated to progress it.
THE ROLE
Summary of Responsibilities:
- Independently evaluate assigned organic and inorganic growth opportunities through rigorous financial and business analysis.
- Develop financial models as the analytical foundation for business cases, valuations and investment decisions.
- Translate market, commercial, technical and operational assumptions into economics, returns and value implications.
- Develop preliminary business cases and recommendations for new growth opportunities.
- Identify and test key value drivers, assumptions, risks and decision-critical uncertainties.
- Conduct market, commercial, competitive and quantitative analyses required to substantiate financial and commercial assumptions.
- Evaluate alternative business models, development scenarios and transaction structures.
- Manage assigned transaction, diligence and opportunity-development workstreams independently.
- Support execution of M&A transactions, partnerships and organic new ventures.
- Prepare analyses and decision materials for the Head of G&NV, senior management and investment governance.
Main Responsibilities of this role:
Financial Modelling & Business-Case Development
- Independently build and maintain financial models for organic new ventures, acquisitions, JVs, farm-ins/farm-outs and other strategic investments.
- Use financial modelling to structure and test the underlying business case, including revenue model, cost structure, capital requirements, funding needs, cash-flow profile and investment returns.
- Develop project economics for organic opportunities and valuation analyses for inorganic opportunities using appropriate methodologies.
- Translate market, commercial, technical, operational and execution assumptions into their financial and investment implications.
- Identify the assumptions that materially drive value and determine the analysis or information required to validate them.
- Conduct scenario, sensitivity, break-even and risked-value analyses to understand the conditions required for an opportunity to be economically attractive.
- Evaluate alternative development, commercial and transaction scenarios on a consistent financial basis.
- Ensure financial models are robust, transparent, internally consistent and appropriately documented.
- Translate model outputs into clear conclusions regarding opportunity attractiveness, risks and areas requiring further work.
Opportunity Evaluation & Analytical Rigor
- Independently assess assigned opportunities across their strategic, market, commercial and financial dimensions.
- Structure the analytical approach required to determine whether an opportunity has a credible business case.
- Conduct market sizing, demand, pricing, competitor, customer and value-chain analysis required to support or challenge key business-case assumptions.
- Assess the reasonableness and consistency of inputs received from technical, commercial and other workstreams.
- Identify gaps, inconsistencies and unsupported assumptions that could materially affect economics or investment conclusions.
- Develop and compare alternative scenarios where the business model or opportunity configuration remains uncertain.
- Determine the principal drivers of value and risk and focus further analysis on matters capable of changing the investment conclusion.
- Develop preliminary recommendations on whether opportunities should progress, require further maturation, be reconfigured or be discontinued.
Commercial, Technical & Operational Analysis
- Work with relevant commercial, technical and operational specialists to develop the assumptions required for financial and business-case evaluation.
- Understand the business implications of technical and operational inputs, including capacity, production, utilization, infrastructure, CAPEX, OPEX and schedule.
- Evaluate how customer demand, pricing, contracting structures, supply arrangements and other commercial variables affect economics and value.
- Develop preliminary commercial assumptions and business-model scenarios using market evidence and relevant benchmarks.
- Test the financial impact of alternative technical, operating and commercial configurations.
- Identify commercial or technical assumptions requiring deeper specialist assessment before an opportunity can progress.
- Ensure assumptions used in financial analysis are appropriately supported and consistent with the underlying business proposition.
Transaction & Opportunity Execution
- Independently manage assigned opportunity evaluations and defined transaction, diligence or development workstreams.
- Establish appropriate workplans, analytical requirements, timelines and deliverables for assigned responsibilities.
- Coordinate internal stakeholders, external advisors and counterparties as required.
- Support due diligence, including review and analysis of data-room information and advisor findings.
- Incorporate diligence findings into financial models, valuations and business-case analysis.
- Identify issues affecting economics, valuation or the investment case and proactively assess their implications.
- Support development of transaction structures, bids and commercial proposals through appropriate financial analysis.
- Manage assigned workstreams and deliverables to the required quality and timeline with limited supervision.
Investment Decision Support
- Synthesize financial, commercial and other analytical findings into clear preliminary investment conclusions.
- Develop recommendations supported by quantitative analysis and clearly articulated assumptions.
- Prepare high-quality business cases, management presentations and investment materials.
- Develop financial and analytical content for Investment Committee and Board submissions.
- Clearly communicate key value drivers, sensitivities, risks, uncertainties and trade-offs.
Other Responsibilities
- Conduct preliminary screening and financial evaluation of new organic and inorganic opportunities identified by GNV.
- Conduct industry, market, competitor and transaction research supporting opportunity evaluation.
- Maintain relevant valuation, transaction, commercial and market benchmarks.
- Support M&A, JV and other transaction processes as required.
- Support development and evaluation of organic new ventures and strategic partnerships.
- Support GNV portfolio analysis, including comparison of opportunities based on value, returns, capital requirements, timing and risk.
- Support annual planning, budgeting and portfolio-review activities.
- Develop and continuously improve financial models, valuation frameworks and business-case analytical tools used by GNV.
- Perform other business-development responsibilities assigned by the Head of GNV.
Special Challenges/Complexity Unique to the Job:
- Financial analysis must extend beyond producing model outputs; the incumbent must understand what drives the economics and whether the underlying business assumptions are credible.
- Opportunities may range from corporate acquisitions to early-stage organic businesses across upstream, midstream and downstream, requiring different financial and analytical approaches.
- Organic opportunities may initially have no established business model, requiring the incumbent to structure a preliminary case from incomplete market, technical and commercial information.
- Must use financial modelling as a tool to identify the assumptions and uncertainties most material to the investment decision, rather than creating false precision around immature inputs.
- Requires sufficient commercial judgment to develop reasonable preliminary assumptions and identify when specialist commercial or technical expertise is required.
- Must integrate and challenge inputs from multiple disciplines while recognizing that technical assurance and sophisticated commercial structuring remain with the relevant specialists or senior opportunity leads.
- Expected to independently structure and execute assigned evaluations with limited supervision and bring forward conclusions and recommended next steps.
- Must balance analytical rigor with the pace required for live transactions and new-business evaluation.
