Job Description
Position Overview
The Business Analyst leads the analysis and delivery of finance automation and process improvement initiatives, working with Finance, IT, Compliance, and Project teams. This role takes on the more complex and ambiguous requirements, and is expected to work independently with stakeholders from discovery through go-live.
The position serves as a trusted bridge between business users and technical teams, turning finance and control needs into clear, buildable solutions that stay aligned with US GAAP, internal controls, and audit requirements.
This role owns its projects end to end, makes sound judgment calls with minimal supervision, and supports the growth of the Associate Business Analyst through guidance and review.
Key Responsibilities
Project Ownership & Delivery
- Own and lead automation and system enhancement projects from discovery to implementation and post-go-live support
- Manage scope, timelines, risks, and dependencies; escalate issues early with clear options and recommendations
- Work directly with senior stakeholders in Finance, IT, Compliance, and Operations without day-to-day direction
- Coordinate with vendors and implementation partners to keep delivery on track
Requirements Gathering & Documentation
- Run requirements sessions with stakeholders, including those with conflicting priorities, and reach agreed requirements
- Break down complex, multi-system, and cross-functional processes into clear requirements
- Produce and own BRDs, functional specifications, process maps, gap analyses, and user stories to a standard ready for development and audit
- Review and give feedback on documentation prepared by the Associate Business Analyst
Process Analysis & Improvement
- Analyze end-to-end finance processes (e.g., AP, AR, reconciliations, close, reporting) to find root causes of inefficiency, not just symptoms
- Evaluate automation opportunities, including effort, benefit, risk, and control impact, and recommend priorities
- Build business cases and track results such as time saved, accuracy gains, and control improvements
Functional Design & IT Collaboration
- Design functional solutions including data flows, business rules, validation logic, approvals, and system interactions
- Work with developers and engineers to shape, challenge, and validate technical designs
- Make sure solutions integrate properly with core systems (e.g., Acumatica) while keeping data accurate and traceable
Testing & Implementation
- Define the UAT approach and test plans, and guide users through execution and sign-off
- Validate that solutions meet both business needs and control requirements before release
- Lead deployment readiness, user communication, and post-implementation review
Governance & Continuous Improvement
- Build audit trails, approvals, segregation of duties, and documentation into every solution from the start
- Support SOX, ITGC, and internal or external audit requests with clear evidence and documentation
- Keep process documentation, templates, and checklists current and consistent across the team
- Stay current on finance automation tools, compliance expectations, and good practice
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Information Systems, or a related field
- 5–7 years of experience in Finance, Business Analysis, or Systems/Project work, with at least 3 years as a Business Analyst or in a similar role
- Proven track record of leading process improvement, system implementation, or automation projects from start to finish
- Experience working independently with senior stakeholders and managing competing priorities
Skills & Competencies
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to handle complex and unclear requirements
- Solid understanding of finance processes and internal controls; working knowledge of US GAAP
- Excellent writing and documentation skills, especially BRDs and functional specifications
- Confident communicator who can explain technical and finance concepts to both audiences and influence decisions
- Strong ownership, sound judgment, and the ability to manage multiple projects at once
- Familiarity with ERP systems (e.g., Acumatica)
- Able to coach and review the work of junior team members
Technical Skills (Preferred)
- Working knowledge of SQL, Excel, or scripting (Python is a plus) for data analysis and validation
- Experience with automation tools, system integrations, or data validation projects
- Exposure to SOX, ITGC, or audit support
