Job Description
Book Interior Designer, Adobe InDesign (Night Shift, Onsite Cebu). Two openings.
This is typesetting and page layout, not rooms and buildings. You take an edited manuscript and turn it into a finished book: a print-ready interior and an eBook that an independent author will hold, read and sell. You will work on a dedicated creative team in Cebu that produces interiors, covers and illustrations for a United States self-publishing house, with new titles arriving every week. We are adding two Book Interior Designers to this team now. Night shift aligned to United States Eastern business hours, onsite in Cebu Business Park, Monday to Friday.
What success looks like
Twelve months in, your titles leave your desk right the first time: styles consistent from the title page to the index, running heads and folios correct on every page, images placed and captioned, and print and eBook files that pass the printer's and the retailer's checks without a bounce. Author revisions come back applied exactly and on the date promised. Your daily output is steady and predictable, and the project board shows it. The team lead trusts your files enough to send them to the author without a second pass.
What you will do
- Typeset book interiors in Adobe InDesign from edited Word manuscripts, following the team's templates and style guide: paragraph and character styles, parent pages, running heads and folios, chapter openers, tables of contents, footnotes and endnotes, front matter and back matter.
- Place and prepare images, tables, pull quotes and captions so they sit correctly on the page and print cleanly, using Photoshop or Illustrator for basic image preparation.
- Prepare print-ready PDFs to the printer's and print-on-demand platform's specifications (trim size, margins, bleed where needed, embedded fonts, PDF/X) for paperback and hardcover editions.
- Produce and check the eBook edition: a reflowable EPUB or Kindle file with a working table of contents, clean structure, and images that display properly on a phone and a tablet.
- Apply author and editor revisions accurately across every edition, keep versions straight, and hand back a change list with each round.
- Check your own work before it moves on: preflight, hyphenation and spelling consistency, widows, orphans, rivers and stacks, page counts and blank pages, so quality control finds nothing.
- Keep the project board and the shared files current so the team lead and the project managers always know where each title stands, and hit the turnaround dates on your titles.
What we are looking for
- At least 2 years of page layout or typesetting of long documents in Adobe InDesign as part of a job: books, journals, magazines, yearbooks, review or training materials, annual reports or catalogs. Book interiors are the ideal; long-document layout in InDesign is the requirement.
- Three interior layout samples you set yourself, sent with your application as PDFs or links. We read them before we call.
- Hands-on with paragraph and character styles, parent pages, tables of contents, footnotes, baseline grids and text threading. You build files properly, not page by page.
- You have prepared print-ready files for a printer or a print-on-demand platform and can explain trim, bleed, margins and PDF/X standards.
- English good enough to read an editor's markup and a United States style guide accurately, and to write a clear note back.
- Living in Cebu and available onsite in Cebu Business Park on the night shift, Monday to Friday.
Who does well here
The designers who do well on this team care about the details other people miss and check their own pages before anyone else has to. They work fast because their files are built right, not because they rush. They take an editor's correction without drama, ask when a note is unclear rather than guessing, and keep the same standard on the tenth title of the week as on the first. They treat every title on their list as their own responsibility and do not wait to be reminded. When they make a mistake they say so, fix it, and change how they work so it does not repeat. They are open to new tools and new ways of working, including AI tools that take the routine parts of the job off their plate, and they tell the team lead before a deadline is at risk, not after. Long days are not the norm here, but when a title genuinely has to ship today they see it through, and they are dependable enough to run their own queue with little supervision.
Nice to have: experience with Amazon KDP and IngramSpark file requirements; EPUB and Kindle work in Kindle Create, Vellum, Sigil or Calibre; Acrobat preflight or Enfocus PitStop; children's books, workbooks, cookbooks or photo books with heavy image layouts; monday.com or a similar project board; a degree in Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Multimedia Arts or Information Technology, or equivalent experience.
What you get: competitive package with salary appraisals; HMO and health insurance; night differential and holiday premium pay; service incentive leave upon regularization; a Monday to Friday schedule with weekends off; stable full-time employment as a direct hire, with real opportunity and growth; a healthy work environment and employee engagement activities; and a steady flow of real titles, so your work is published and read.
How we hire: apply here on LinkedIn and attach or link three interior samples you set yourself. Every applicant gets a reply. The process is a screening call in our evening (8 to 11 PM Manila), a short InDesign exercise so we can see how you build a file, and a final interview with the client's creative team lead by video on our shift. We aim to move within days, not weeks, and to have you starting within two weeks of an offer.
