BI Engineer

The BI Engineer designs, builds, tests, deploys, and supports enterprise Power BI semantic models, datasets, dashboards, and reports that deliver governed, performant self-service analytics. This role translates business requirements into dimensional models, reusable measures, intuitive report experiences, and secure analytics assets while partnering with stakeholders, data engineers, architects, and platform teams to define metrics, validate data, optimize performance, manage refreshes, and troubleshoot complex reporting issues.

Responsibilities

• Translate business questions, reporting requirements, and KPI definitions into scalable Power BI solutions and reusable semantic models.
• Design and develop Power BI datasets, semantic models, dashboards, scorecards, paginated reports, and complex interactive reports.
• Build dimensional models, relationships, calculation groups, hierarchies, field parameters, measures, and business-friendly reporting layers.
• Develop advanced DAX, Power Query, SQL, and reusable BI patterns for accurate, performant analytics.
• Create intuitive report experiences using drill-through, bookmarks, dynamic filtering, navigation, conditional formatting, and effective visualization design.
• Tune model and report performance using query reduction, aggregations, source optimization, model design, and refresh optimization.
• Validate data, reconcile metrics, investigate discrepancies, and partner with data engineering teams to resolve upstream data issues.
• Configure row-level security, object-level security, workspace access, deployment pipelines, endorsements, sensitivity labels, and lifecycle controls.
• Monitor refreshes, usage, performance, adoption, and production issues; document metric definitions, model design, lineage, dependencies, and support procedures.

Qualifications

• Education & Experience
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, Business Analytics, Mathematics, or a related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 3+ years of experience in Power BI development, including semantic layer design, data modeling, dataset development, dashboard creation, reporting, and enterprise analytics solutions.
• Experience designing, developing, and supporting governed self-service analytics and business intelligence solutions.

Technical Skills

• Advanced Power BI expertise, including semantic models, datasets, dashboards, reports, DAX, Power Query, deployment pipelines, refresh management, performance optimization, and visualization design.
• Strong SQL skills for data profiling, validation, metric reconciliation, troubleshooting, and working with warehouse, lakehouse, or enterprise data platforms.
• Strong understanding of dimensional modeling, star schemas, semantic layers, aggregations, KPI development, and analytics-ready data products.
• Experience implementing row-level security (RLS), workspace governance, access controls, certified datasets, lineage tracking, and secure analytics delivery.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric, Azure data services, Snowflake, data warehouses, lakehouses, or comparable cloud-based data platforms.
• Solid understanding of data visualization best practices and user-centric dashboard design.
