Backend & Data Developer

Bar2 is a UK-based payroll and compliance platform undergoing a major digital transformation.

We are building a modern operational platform across onboarding, compliance, payroll, integrations, and customer experience using technologies including:

• Azure
• SQL
• Azure Functions
• Logic Apps
• Power Platform
• React / Next.js

We are looking for a hands-on backend developer to help stabilise, extend, and operationalise our in-progress platform.

Role description

This is a remote contract role for a Backend & Data Developer.

The role is focused on backend systems, APIs, database development, and data reliability.

You will work closely with the Head of Platform, frontend developers, and integration developers to help deliver and stabilise an existing architecture rather than redesign it from scratch.

This role is highly execution-focused and suited to someone who enjoys solving practical backend and data problems inside a fast-moving environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Backend Development

• Build and maintain Azure Functions
• Implement backend business logic
• Support system reliability and performance

API Development

• Design and maintain internal APIs
• Define and maintain API contracts
• Support frontend and integration layer requirements

SQL & Data layer

• Write and optimise SQL queries, views, and stored procedures
• Support data migration and transformation activities
• Maintain data integrity across systems

Debugging and Stability

• Investigate backend failures and performance issues
• Troubleshoot integration and data problems
• Improve observability and logging

Documentation

• Create and maintain technical documentation for:
• APIs
• Database structures
• Backend processes
• Data mappings
• Environment setup and troubleshooting

Qualifications

Required:

• Experience with:
• Azure Functions
• Azure SQL
• REST APIs
• Backend application development
• Strong SQL and data modelling capability
• Experience debugging backend and integration issues
• Comfortable working with existing systems and improving them incrementally
• Experience working with frontend and integration teams

Preferred:

• Experience with:
• Power Platform / Dataverse
• Logic Apps
• Data migration projects
• Workflow-based systems
• React/Next.js environments
• Understanding of distributed systems and integration patterns
