We are seeking an experienced Generalist/Tax Accountant to perform varied accounting and taxation functions across the business. The role will have a strong focus on tax compliance, financial reporting, bookkeeping and general accounting, workpapers, and compliance software usage.
Requirements & Qualifications:
- Experience: 3-5+ years experience in Australian public practice.
- Credentials: Degree in Accounting & sufficient practical work experience.
- Technical Tax Knowledge: Good working knowledge of Australian tax law and compliance requirements.
- Experience preparing tax returns, BAS, financial statements, and supporting tax compliance engagements.
- Exposure to Division 7A matters, including reviewing, calculating, or assisting with Division 7A loan compliance and related tax considerations.
- Systems & Software: Experience with Xero, MYOB, Reckon, or similar accounting software. Strong systems and document management skills, especially with workpaper software such as FYI or similar software, keeping files well-substantiated and audit-ready. Experience in the Microsoft suite of products.
- Soft Skills: High attention to detail and accuracy in work, strong organizational and time management skills, willingness to learn, take initiative, and grow within the team. Proactive in communicating with business owners directly to provide a professional and responsive service with a focus on building trust and reliability, along with clear verbal and written communication skills and actual experience working and communicating directly with an Australian Accounting Firm Owner.
Key Responsibilities:
- Tax Compliance: Prepare income tax returns for individuals, companies, trusts, and partnerships. Preparation of Business Activity Statements (BAS) and Instalment Activity Statements (IAS) returns. Assist with basic tax planning, tax adjustments, and reconciliations. Assist with Division 7A reviews, calculations, and compliance requirements, including identifying potential Division 7A implications and supporting the preparation of associated workpapers and documentation. Support the team in meeting ATO deadlines and maintaining compliance.
- Financial Reporting: Prepare year-end financial statements and supporting workpapers. Assist with monthly or quarterly management reports, as required. Perform account reconciliations and ensure accuracy of general ledger entries.
- Bookkeeping & General Accounting: Perform data entry, bank reconciliations, and journal processing. Maintain up-to-date and accurate records for all clients. General experience in the Microsoft suite of products.
- Workpapers & Compliance: Prepare clear, accurate, and well-supported workpapers that substantiate tax returns, adjustments, and financial statement items. Strong attention to detail and analytical thinking to prepare accurate workpapers, reconcile accounts, and support tax calculations and lodgements. Maintain good technical tax and compliance knowledge, including understanding Australian tax rules, Division 7A considerations, financial statement support, and relevant checklist/process requirements.
- Software Use: Work with Xero, MYOB, Reckon, or similar accounting software. Use workpaper software such as FYI or similar platforms to keep files well-substantiated and audit-ready. Assist in maintaining cloud-based client files and ensuring data integrity.

- Internal: Finance Team, Team Members, Management.
- External: Business Owners, Australian Accounting Firm Owners, Clients, and relevant regulatory bodies.
Working Hours & Schedule
- Schedule: Fixed AU Shift (Aligned with Australian Business Hours).
- Compensation & Offer: The final offer will be commensurate with skills, years of tenure, and overall experience, ensuring a competitive package that reflects the intermediate to senior-level nature of this role.
