The Associate Director, Medical & Clinical Operations provides strategic and operational leadership across healthcare business process management functions, with an emphasis on Utilization Management (UM) and Medication Therapy Management (MTM). This role owns end-to-end clinical and operational processes, leads large-scale teams, and drives functional, market-level, and site-level strategies to ensure high-quality, compliant, and efficient healthcare operations.
The Associate Director is accountable for the performance of managers and/or senior-level professional staff. The scope of impact is typically at the operational, market, or business-unit level, with decisions affecting entire functions and internal or external customer accounts.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & People Management
- Provide leadership, direction, coaching, and performance oversight to managers and/or senior-level professional staff.
- Lead organizations of 100 or more FTEs, ensuring optimal workforce performance, engagement, and scalability.
- Build, develop, and sustain high-performing teams through effective talent management, succession planning, and performance accountability.
- Promote a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
Operational & Clinical Oversight
- Own and manage end-to-end clinical and operational processes within Healthcare Business Process Management.
- Oversee Utilization Management and Medication Therapy Management operations, ensuring compliance with clinical guidelines, policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Identify and resolve complex technical, operational, and organizational issues that extend beyond the scope of an individual team.
- Ensure consistent achievement of quality, production, and service-level objectives across assigned markets or sites.
Strategy, Planning & Decision-Making
- Develop and execute functional, market-level, and/or site-level strategies, operational plans, and organizational priorities.
- Set production and resource priorities aligned with enterprise objectives.
- Make product, service, or process decisions with broad impact across functions and customer accounts.
- Leverage data and analytics to assess performance, drive operational improvements, and support decision-making.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
- Partner closely with clinical, operational, and business stakeholders to align priorities and deliver results.
- Effectively communicate strategic objectives, operational expectations, and performance outcomes across multiple levels of the organization.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in Healthcare Business Process Management, including clinical operations.
- At least 3 years of experience in a leadership capacity, overseeing managers and/or senior professional staff.
- Demonstrated experience leading large, complex teams of 100+ FTEs.
- Direct experience in Utilization Management (UM) and Medication Therapy Management (MTM).
- Demonstrated success in building, developing, and leading high-performing teams.
- Strong computer literacy, with advanced analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across clinical and operational stakeholders.
- Proven ability to own and manage end-to-end processes with measurable operational and organizational impact.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting multi-market or multi-site healthcare operations.
- Background in payer, managed care, or health services organizations.
- Experience driving large-scale change initiatives or operational transformations.
