About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Assistant Controller (Accounting Manager) to lead accounting operations and support financial reporting, audit, and compliance functions within the organization. This role plays a critical part in ensuring financial accuracy, maintaining internal controls, and delivering timely and reliable reporting to support business decisions.
The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting expertise, leadership experience, and a proactive approach to process improvement. This is a great opportunity for an experienced accounting professional looking to step into a strategic, high-impact role.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead daily accounting operations, including month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes
• Oversee preparation and review of financial statements, reports, and supporting schedules
• Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal policies, and regulatory requirements
• Review and approve journal entries, reconciliations, and financial transactions
• Manage audit processes and coordinate with internal and external auditors
• Establish and maintain internal controls to safeguard financial data
• Analyze financial data, identify variances, and provide actionable insights
• Partner with leadership and cross-functional teams on financial reporting and planning
• Develop and improve accounting policies, procedures, and workflows
• Lead and mentor accounting staff, including performance management and development
• Ensure timely and accurate reporting to stakeholders
• Support system implementations and process improvement initiatives
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• Minimum of five (5) years of progressive accounting experience
• Experience in a U.S.-based organization or environment
• Background in public accounting (audit, tax, or financial reporting)
• Experience with ERP systems (e.g., Banner, SAP, Oracle, PeopleSoft)
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational abilities
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
• CPA or CMA certification
• Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration
• Experience in higher education or nonprofit environments
• Experience with Ellucian (Banner) or similar systems
