Position Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented Structural Steel Draftsman/Detailer to our client based in NSW, Australia. This role is strictly focused on specialized metalwork drafting, engineering fabrication requirements, and architectural integration—going well beyond general architectural modeling.
You will manage the entire design lifecycle, moving confidently from conceptual approval drawings to precise manufacturing outputs. The successful candidate must possess extensive technical expertise in Autodesk Advance Steel and be comfortable collaborating with Australian project managers, engineers, and fabricators.
Key Responsibilities
1. Concept & Approval Phase
- Translate architectural sketches, scope documents, and site measurements into structural concept drawings.
- Create clear design proposals for client and council approval, ensuring compliance with Australian Standards (AS/NZS).
- Coordinate adjustments based on feedback from the NSW-based engineering and project management teams.
2. Three-Phase Shop Drawing Production
Upon concept approval, you will execute a strict three-phase drafting workflow:
- Phase 1 (General Arrangement): Develop comprehensive 3D General Arrangement (GA) drawings. Map out spatial constraints, accurate site interfaces, and overall structural layouts.
- Phase 2 (Cutting & Manufacture): Generate detailed part drawings and accurate cutting files (DXF/NC data). Program material optimization for CNC processing, lasers, and saw cutting.
- Phase 3 (Assembly & Fabrication): Produce detailed assembly drawings. Include clear isometric views, welding symbols, bill of materials (BOM), and sequential erection instructions.
3. Project Management & Software Integration
- Utilize Autodesk Advance Steel daily as the primary engine for all 3D modeling and detailing.
- Track project timelines, log revisions, and update daily task statuses using Contractor Foreman.
- Maintain organized digital files following the Australian client's specific naming conventions and structural drafting standards.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Experience: 2–3 years of dedicated experience drafting architectural metalwork (e.g., balustrades, handrails, feature stairs, facades, structural steel connections) for Australian East Coast clients.
- Software Mastery: Extensive, non-negotiable proficiency in Autodesk Advance Steel.
- Regional Knowledge: Solid understanding of NSW building codes, steel grades, and standard Australian fabrication metrics (metric system).
- Communication: Exceptional verbal and written English skills for seamless daily collaboration with overseas teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional experience navigating and updating project files in Contractor Foreman.
- A degree or diploma in Engineering, Architecture, Drafting, or a related technical field.
