Job Description

The British Embassy Manila is a large diplomatic mission delivering a dynamic and rapidly expanding programme of activity in support of the UK's objectives on prosperity, security and consular matters. Main purpose of job:

The Department of Business and Trade (DBT), now known as Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade (BIST), brings together business, innovation, science and trade to support growth, investment and opportunity across the UK. In the Philippines, BIST works closely with the Foreign and Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and other partners to: 

  • promote British trade and investment
  • build the global appetite for British goods and services
  • break down market access barriers to trade to help businesses succeed 

BIST has almost 250 staff working across 15 Asia Pacific (APAC) countries stretching from New Zealand to Thailand, led by His Majesty's Trade Commissioner (HMTC) Martin Kent.

The post advertised is for a BIST APAC Trade Performance and Analysis Officer based in the British Embassy, Manila. This a stretching role supporting multiple posts in a high-profile area of the UK Government.

The successful candidate will be joining a regional operations team based in locations across the Asia Pacific (APAC) region. The line manager and successful candidate for this role will be located in the British Embassy, Manila but will be working with colleagues across APAC. 

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve

The role will work closely with the Senior Business Analyst and wider regional operations colleagues to support trade and investment performance reporting, dashboard management, data quality and capability-building across the APAC network. The jobholder will help ensure regional dashboards, analysis products and data inputs are accurate, well-structured and accessible, supporting colleagues to use evidence and performance data in their work. 

The role will also provide first-line support to colleagues across 15 APAC markets, helping them use data, dashboards and BIST systems effectively through troubleshooting, guidance, training and practical tools. The jobholder will support the Senior Business Analyst in responding to changing data requirements, helping prepare ad-hoc analysis and internal reports, and escalating complex queries where appropriate. 

Trade and investment performance, reporting and analysis (40%)

  • Support the quarterly performance review and Board process by preparing data updates, coordinating inputs and helping produce clear, accurate performance materials. 
  • Support the Senior Business Analyst and Strategy Director to deliver standardised analytical requests across the region (including analysis of trade and investment trends; and market research) helping ensure outputs are well-structured, evidence-based and suitable for the intended audience.
  • Act as an initial point of contact for more complex analytical requests, helping clarify requirements and identify potential data sources, prior to escalating to the Strategy Director and/or Senior Business Analyst.
  • Carry out first-level quality assurance of analysis reports and performance products, checking consistency, accuracy and alignment with source data before escalating queries or risks.
  • Share key performance highlights, outcomes and success stories through relevant HQ and regional channels, including quarterly reviews, the APAC Board and the HMTC forward look. 

Data quality, dashboard support, and troubleshooting (40%)

  • Provide first-line support for dashboard issues, including troubleshooting, investigation, and coordination with HQ, escalating more complex issues to the Senior Business Analyst. 
  • Monitor the APAC Performance Dashboard against relevant data sources to support accuracy and confidence in regional reporting.
  • Support teams to improve data capture and strengthen the quality of information entered into DBT systems through bespoke training, demonstration sessions and training materials.
  • Update the APAC Performance Dashboard with project spend and delivery confidence information, drawing from DMAS and agreed source data.
  • Consolidate inputs from CTPs and translate them into import-ready formats for dashboard integration, ensuring information is structured, accurate and ready for upload. 

Training, tools and coordination (20%) 

  • Work with Functional Leads and Regional Sector Leads to maintain and improve regional capability materials and tools, like the Exports Hub 
  • Coordinate with the Capability Officer to support the delivery of function-related learning and development programmes.
  • Deliver bespoke function-related training sessions to markets on a needs-led basis.
  • Coordinate with HQ on Data Hub queries and feedback from teams, helping improve system use, data capture and ways of working.
  • Work with Regional Sector Leads to maintain the KAM briefing database, helping ensure records are current, accurate and available to support SLT engagement.
  • Support the Senior Business Analyst with consolidation, testing, and documentation of AI-related agents or tools developed by the regional team, helping ensure they are clear, usable and aligned with team needs. 

Additional responsibilities:  

  • Positive involvement in the RICE (Respect, Integrity, Collaboration and Excellence) values of the British Embassy.  
  • The successful candidate will sit within BIST Manila and will be expected to contribute to the team's wider objectives and play a fully participative role in the Manila team and wider-British Embassy. 
  • Work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues across the British Embassy to support the One HMG approach. 
  • They should be open to flex their working hours in case of business need to attend functions outside their regular schedule and undertake occasional travel as needed. 

Essential Qualifications:

  • At least two years experience working on data visualisation, data analysis, performance reporting and/or management information. 
  • Hands-on experience creating dashboards or data products using a data visualisation platform such as Looker Studio, Power BI, Tableau, QuickSight or a similar tool.
  • Experience working with AI tools such as Copilot and the like
  • Ability to work confidently with data, identify key points and present information clearly, accurately and in a way that is useful for non-technical audiences.
  • Good attention to detail, with the ability to check data inputs, dashboards, reporting products and financial information for accuracy, consistency and completeness.
  • Good organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing tasks, meet deadlines, coordinate inputs and follow up with colleagues across a regional network.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across teams, locations and grades, including providing first-line support, responding constructively to feedback and escalating complex issues appropriately.
  • Proficient in spoken and written English

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience using SQL to support data analysis, reporting or data quality checks. 
  • Experience supporting CRM system improvements, including gathering user needs, documenting requirements and helping test changes.
  • Understanding of trade, investment, market access or economic policy work in an international context.
  • Experience working with or within UK Government, including an understanding of HMG ways of working and relevant networks.
  • Experience working in a large or complex organisation, ideally within government or an international setting. 
  • Proficiency in the Filipino language is desirable
