Title: Head of Engineering

About the Role

Our client is seeking an experienced Head of Engineering to provide strong leadership and elevate engineering standards across a portfolio of innovative products.

In this role, you will take ownership of the technology roadmap, oversee its implementation and ongoing operations, and contribute to strategic planning. You will lead, inspire, and develop a multi-disciplinary team of highly skilled engineers and technical leaders, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and technical leadership across the sub-domain, ensuring the timely delivery of Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) epics and features.
  • Lead, coach, and mentor engineering teams to enhance capability, uplift technical expertise, and build a high-performing culture.
  • Drive delivery excellence with a focus on speed, cost efficiency, and quality, ensuring alignment across squads on objectives and outcomes.
  • Support and advance lean portfolio management by aligning business roadmaps with technology delivery.
  • Lead cross-functional agile teams across multiple business units to meet performance targets. Remove technical and delivery impediments that cannot be resolved at the squad level.
  • Oversee financial performance, including budgeting, forecasting, and cost management, while promoting continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) practices.
  • Build and sustain market-leading engineering capability through effective resource planning, capacity management, and strategic deployment of talent.

Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience delivering technology initiatives within large, complex organisations, ideally within banking or financial services.
  • Strong track record of leading large-scale, multi-stream programs across multiple regions, business units, and vendors.
  • Demonstrated success in building, leading, and scaling high-performing engineering teams of 50+ professionals.
  • Ability to navigate complex organisational structures and build strong relationships with senior stakeholders using both formal and informal networks.
  • Deep technical expertise combined with strong business acumen and strategic vision, with the ability to assess and maximise the value of IT systems.
  • Strong strategic planning and execution capabilities.
  • Ability to lead teams with a fintech mindset while operating within the governance and risk frameworks of a large financial institution.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organisational, prioritisation, and planning abilities.
  • Solid stakeholder management experience.
  • Expertise in financial management, budgeting, and forecasting.
  • Experience in capacity planning, resource allocation, and performance optimisation.
  • Proven ability to track, measure, and continuously improve team performance.
